The Next Engine for the Next Emergency

Engine 356 (E356) is a four-wheel-drive, short-wheelbase fire engine built to reach places larger engines cannot—remote wildland areas and homes along narrow, steep mountain roads.

E356 responds to approximately 130 incidents each year and plays a critical role during winter storms, helping clear trees and power lines from evacuation routes. It also provides helicopter landing zone support during medical emergencies.

During the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire, E356 extinguished four fires on Kings Mountain when no other fire resources were available and helped hold the Loma Mar fire line for three days until Cal Fire arrived.

E356 Must Be Replaced

At 23 years old, E356 is nearing the end of its useful life. Repairs and maintenance are increasing, and extended out-of-service periods put our community at greater risk. 

A new Type 3 wildland engine now costs more than $800,000, and we must place an order this year to ensure E356 can be replaced before reaching the end of its expected service life.

We are pursuing FEMA and San Mateo County Measure K funding, but even with grants, there will be a significant funding gap.
